Bought a Hybrid? A Servicing Guide for NZ Drivers
You’ve bought a hybrid, you’re spending less at the petrol station and you’re getting used to how it drives.
But when it comes to servicing, what does it actually need?
If you’ve picked up a Toyota Aqua, Prius, Corolla Hybrid or Honda Fit Hybrid, you might be wondering whether a normal service is enough, or whether everything needs to go through a dealership.
The starting point is your car’s service history and the manufacturer’s schedule. At Eastern Automotive in East Tamaki, we help East Auckland drivers work out what’s due, including owners of NZ-new hybrids and Japanese imports.

Start with the service history
Before booking your first hybrid service, have a look at the paperwork that came with the car.
A service book, workshop invoices or records from the seller can help show what’s already been done. Look for dates, kilometre readings and details of the work, rather than just a note saying “serviced”.
A recent oil change doesn’t necessarily tell you when the brake fluid, spark plugs or coolant were last attended to.
If the history is incomplete, don’t worry. Bring along whatever you have and tell us what you know. We can inspect the car, check what its schedule calls for and explain what needs attention.
For a Japanese import, the schedule needs to match the particular model and year. Don’t assume that advice for a newer NZ-new hybrid applies to yours.
Yes, your hybrid still needs oil changes
A conventional hybrid uses a petrol engine alongside its electric motor. That petrol engine still needs its oil and filter replaced at the scheduled intervals.
The fact that the engine switches off during parts of your journey doesn’t remove that requirement. Using less fuel isn’t a reason to stretch out your servicing.
The oil specification matters too. Your hybrid needs the grade recommended for its engine, which may be different from the oil you used in your previous car.
What’s different about a hybrid service?
Much of the work will sound familiar: engine servicing, brake inspections, tyre checks, steering, suspension, lights and wipers.
The difference is that there are hybrid-specific checks as well.
At Eastern Automotive, our hybrid servicing includes a diagnostic scan of the hybrid system, checks for warning lights and stored fault codes, and a 12V battery test. We also check inverter coolant where fitted.
On Toyota hybrids, the inverter helps control power to the electric motor and has a separate coolant circuit. It’s one of the reasons a hybrid service needs to look beyond the petrol engine.
What needs replacing depends on the car’s age, kilometres and maintenance schedule. Every service won’t involve the same work.
Brakes still need attention, even if the pads last longer
Regenerative braking recovers energy as your hybrid slows down. It can reduce wear on the conventional brake pads, but it doesn’t make the brakes maintenance-free.
The discs, callipers and parking brake still need checking. Brake fluid needs attention too.
We remove the wheels to inspect the brakes properly, rather than relying on what’s visible from outside. That helps us check for wear, rust and components that aren’t moving as they should.
Don’t forget the smaller battery
Your hybrid has a large battery for the hybrid system, but it also has a smaller 12V battery.
That smaller battery powers the computers and helps the hybrid system start up. If it’s weak, the car may not switch into its ready-to-drive mode.
A starting problem doesn’t automatically mean the main hybrid battery needs replacing. The cause needs diagnosing, which is why we include a 12V battery test in our servicing.
How often should you service a hybrid in NZ?
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule for your particular vehicle. Service intervals usually include both a time limit and a kilometre limit, with servicing due when the first is reached.
If you hardly drive, the time limit still matters. If you cover plenty of kilometres, the next service may come around sooner than you expect.
Let your workshop know how you use the car, particularly if it’s a work vehicle or spends long periods on the road. Your driving conditions can affect its maintenance requirements.
If you’re unsure when yours is due, give us the make, model, year, current kilometres and any service records you have.
We’ve got your hybrid servicing covered at Eastern Automotive!
You don’t need to arrive knowing which fluids need changing or what a fault code means. That’s our job to explain.
At Eastern Automotive, we follow your manufacturer’s schedule and talk you through the work needed and the cost before we start.
We service conventional hybrids, including NZ-new vehicles and Japanese imports, at our workshop on Allens Road in East Tamaki. We don’t service plug-in hybrids at this stage.
