- Engine oil and filter, using the low-viscosity oil your hybrid is designed for
- Engine air filter
- Engine coolant checked
- Spark plugs when your schedule calls for them
- Transmission fluid when your schedule calls for it
Brakes: This one surprises a lot of hybrid owners. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing on a hybrid, so the brake discs and pads rarely get hot. Moisture sits on them, discs rust and callipers can seize, especially at the rear.
This is often invisible with the wheels on, so we take the wheels off, clean and lubricate the calliper slides and check the park brake. Brake fluid absorbs moisture too, and most manufacturers want it replaced every two years.
Inverter coolant: Toyota hybrids run a separate coolant loop for the inverter, the part that controls power to the electric motor. It’s easy to overlook, and low or old coolant can lead to overheating warnings and costly repairs.
12V battery: Every hybrid still has a standard 12V battery that runs the computers and starts the hybrid system. When it’s weak, your car may not start at all. That’s the last thing you need on a busy morning, so we test it at every service.
How often should a hybrid be serviced?
Most hybrids need a service every 12 months or 15,000 km, whichever comes first. Toyota recommends this for the Aqua, Prius, Corolla and RAV4 hybrids. Your owner’s manual or service book has the exact schedule, and we follow it.
How much does a hybrid service cost?
The price depends on your make, model and what your schedule calls for that year, as some services include spark plugs or fluid changes. Call us on 09 274 2941 for a quote.
Is a hybrid service different from a normal car service?
Yes. A hybrid service covers everything a petrol car service does, plus the hybrid system. That means a diagnostic scan of the hybrid system and a check of the separate inverter coolant.
Will servicing outside the dealer void my warranty?
In most cases, no. The Motor Trade Association (MTA) says your Consumer Guarantees Act rights can’t be removed just because you didn’t use the dealer’s workshop. A standard factory warranty stays valid when the service follows the manufacturer’s schedule, with the right parts and fluids, and the records are kept. Some extended warranties have extra conditions, such as servicing at the dealer, so check your terms first.
Do hybrids need oil changes?
Yes. A hybrid’s petrol engine needs its oil and filter changed at every service. Hybrid engines often run in short bursts and stay cooler, so the oil can break down even if you don’t do many kilometres.
Which hybrids do you service?
We service all makes and models of hybrid, NZ-new and Japanese imports. That includes the Toyota Aqua, Prius, Corolla, Yaris, C-HR, Camry and RAV4 hybrids, and the Honda Fit and Vezel hybrids. We don’t service plug-in hybrids at this stage.
Do hybrids need a WOF?
Yes. Hybrids need a Warrant of Fitness like any other car, and the inspection includes checks on the high-voltage wiring. From 1 November 2026, many newer vehicles move to a WOF every two years, which makes a yearly service the main safety check in between. We do WOFs while you wait.
Do I need a service if I hardly drive my hybrid?
Yes. Brake fluid, coolant and engine oil age with time as well as kilometres. A yearly service keeps a low-kilometre hybrid safe and reliable.
Can any mechanic service a hybrid?
Routine work like oil, brakes, tyres and suspension is standard workshop work. The hybrid system runs at high voltage, so any work on it needs the right diagnostic tools, training and safety gear. Ask your workshop how they handle hybrid systems before you book.
