M3 RACING CELEBRATE 2013 V8 SUPERTOURERS SERIES CHAMPIONS
M3 Racing celebrated sweet success last weekend at Pukekohe Park Raceway when Greg Murphy stepped on the top step of the podium securing the 2013 V8 Supertourers series Crown after a fierce battle with Ant Pederson throughout the entire weekend.
Fellow team member and ORIX Team Racing driver Paul Manuell, who teamed up with former Bathurst Champion Nick Percat for the long distance endurance events also came tantalizing close to tasting champagne after a stellar drive in the 70 lap feature race where they placed a credible 5th place over the finish line from a starting position of 17th position.
The weekend did however deliver some significant challenges for the M3 Team as a rare mechanical issue with the power steering system severely hampered the ORIX Commodore in race two which culminated in two additional pit stops netting the first DNF of the season. Furthermore the ORIX Commodore was “tagged” into the wall on the first lap of qualifying where it suffered significant damage which challenged the team who engaged in time consuming repairs which sacrificed any chance of a top qualifying position.
“Were extremely happy with the over result said Paul Manuell, our the M3 team finished the series with all three cars within the top ten in arguably the most competitive championship New Zealand V8 tin-top racing has seen in many years. I also pass on my congratulations to team mate Richard Moore who finished a credible 4th overall in only his second full season of V8 racing”.
280 ORIX guests also enjoyed the success of the M3 Team within the well positioned ORIX hospitality suite delivered by ORIX’s team of volunteers. Paul wishes to personally thank Glenn Middleton and the entire dedicated ORIX Crew who have over the years created a highly professional and family friendly hospitality product.

CLEAN CUT AT HAMPTON DOWNS ENDURANCE ROUND
ORIX Team Racing driver Paul Manuell applied a slightly unorthodox but very streamlined approach to the endurance sector of the highly competitive Supertourer Series at the technical circuit Hampton Downs over the weekend. Paul agreed to contribute his full crop of hair by having it shaved by M3 team-mate and motorsport legend Greg Murphy as his contribution to Canteen New Zealand who do a fantastic job of supporting young people living with cancer. “It’s been a real eye opener and absolute honor to support this very important charity” said Paul who’s hair-shedding effort netted over $7,000 to the $40,000 raised.
Paul’s new streamlined look also delivered a performance gain on the circuit as Paul qualified the ORIX Commodore in a strong seventh spot amongst a classy field littered with some of the best touring car drivers in Australasia.
Paul’s endurance co-driver John Penny, who endured a more difficult qualifying session, commenced race one from the back of the grid however experience counted as the two drivers gained valuable positions both on the circuit and in the pits with a very slick driver change netting them a well deserved eighth spot by the end of the nearly one hour endurance race.
Unfortunately race two was a significantly shorter affair as the ORIX Commodore suffered a rare mechanical failure when the transmission failed on the warm up lap.
The M3 crew worked their magic replacing the transmission in slick time and the ORIX Commodore again starting near the rear of the field due to the race two DNF. The well-rehearsed driver changes combined with a superb handing ORIX Commodore again paid off both Paul and John worked through the field to a credible 11th place by race end.
“We still had a strong and consistent weekend considering the challenge faced proceeding race two however the car was handling very well netting us consistent and highly competitive lap times which bode well for the next endurance event scheduled at Hampton Downs in less than three weeks” says Paul.

Taupo bought on its fair share of challenges for Paul & the ORIX Racing Team. Practice and qualifying deemed tough for Paul as he sat in 13th position for race one & 12th for race two. Full credit given to the M3 team who did an exceptional job of repairing Richard Moore's car overnight, after a technical braking hindrance found Richard amongst the tyres with a smashed front end. Nevertheless, Moore's Whitehaven Commodore was ready for early morning hot laps for some lucky clients on Sunday.
Race one and two netted results of 13th and 12th where identifying the ultimate set up proved to be a challenge.
The final race of the day proved to be the most interesting of the series to date throwing up multiple leader changes, safety car interventions, accidents and thrilling races within the race itself. Paul used his experience and race craft to full effect by guiding his incredibly well handling car from start position 15th to a credible 4th position after 28 vigorous laps which lasted over an hour.
